About Dattatreya Beej Mantra
Lord Dattatreya is a unique deity in Hinduism — the combined incarnation of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, representing the unity of creation, preservation, and transformation. He is depicted with three heads (representing the Trinity), six arms, four dogs (representing the four Vedas), and a cow (representing Mother Earth). He is considered the Adi Guru (original spiritual teacher) of the Nath Sampradaya.
Dattatreya is famous for his teaching in the Avadhuta Gita that wisdom can be learned from everything in nature. He declared that he had 24 gurus including the earth, water, fire, air, the sun, a pigeon, a python, a bee, an elephant, a deer, and a courtesan — each teaching him a specific spiritual lesson. This radical openness to learning is the essence of Dattatreya consciousness.
The beej mantra 'Draam' (द्रां) activates the crown chakra and connects the practitioner with the guru principle (Guru Tattva) that operates throughout creation. It is particularly recommended for spiritual seekers who have not yet found a physical guru, as Dattatreya himself becomes the inner guide, directing the devotee through intuition, dreams, and synchronistic encounters toward the teachings they need.
