About Goddess Saraswati
Goddess Saraswati, also known as Sharada, Vagdevi, and Bharati, is the Hindu goddess of knowledge, wisdom, learning, music, and the arts. She is the consort of Lord Brahma and represents the free flow of consciousness and creativity. The Rigveda identifies her with the sacred Saraswati River, and she embodies the purifying power of knowledge that flows like a river, cleansing ignorance and nourishing wisdom.
Saraswati is depicted as a graceful goddess dressed in white (symbolizing purity and sattva), seated on a white lotus or a swan (hamsa). She holds a veena (stringed instrument) representing the arts, a book (pustaka) representing the Vedas, a crystal mala (sphatik mala) representing meditation, and sometimes a water pot (kamandalu) representing the purifying power of knowledge. Her swan mount symbolizes the ability to discriminate between truth and illusion (viveka).
Students, scholars, musicians, artists, and spiritual seekers worship Saraswati for intellectual clarity, creative inspiration, eloquence in speech, and academic success. Saraswati Puja during Vasant Panchami (spring) is one of the most widely celebrated festivals across India. Her mantras are chanted before beginning any new study, learning a new skill, or seeking divine inspiration for creative endeavors.
